Ametrine ~

Ametrine is the name for a combination of amethyst and citrine manifesting in areas of purple and yellow in the same piece of quartz.  The Wikipedia article linked to here says that most commercially available ametrine is heat-treated amethyst.  

Bearing this in mind, I think this is likely to be the case with this eye-catching piece - the division of colour is so even!

I think it's less likely to be the case in the piece below in which the yellow is limited to a fine streak near the centre of the image:


In this dramatic amethyst cluster goldish spots of colour can be seen near the tips of the points:

My guess is that these are natural citrine.  This cluster features in my article about amethyst.
